Pheromone Mediated Sexual Reproduction of Pennate Diatom Cylindrotheca closterium

چکیده
Abstract Benthic diatoms dominate primary production in marine subtidal and intertidal environments. Their extraordinary species diversity ecological success is thought to be linked with their predominantly heterothallic sexual reproduction. Little known about pheromone involvement during mating of pennate diatoms. Here we describe guided the coastal raphid diatom Cylindrotheca closterium . We show that two types (mt + mt ? ) have distinct functions. Similar other benthic diatoms, cells are searching for pair. To enhance efficiency exudes an attraction which proved by establishing a novel capillary assay. Further, more pheromones produced promote events. One arrests cell cycle progression while induces gametogenesis suggest C. shares functionally similar system like S eminavis robusta Pseudostaurosira trainorii synchronize events mate attraction. Remarkably, found no evidence producing pheromones, differentiates from pennates suggests less complex

Exopolysaccharide production by the epipelic diatom Cylindrotheca closterium: effects of nutrient conditions.
During the stationary phase of a batch culture of the epipelic diatom Cylindrotheca closterium, accumulation of exopolysaccharides and intracellular carbohydrates was observed. When nitrogen was added to the culture in the stationary phase, growth was resumed and the accumulation of exopolysaccharides was delayed. This indicated that nitrogen depletion caused cessation of growth, and stimulated...
متن کاملEffects of UVB radiation and salt stress on growth, pigments and antioxidative defence of the marine diatom Cylindrotheca closterium
During emersion, diatoms are exposed to sunlight (with UVB) on tidal flats, where the salinity may increase as a result of evaporation. In order to investigate whether a combination of UV radiation and desiccation would cause oxidative stress under such conditions, an experiment has been carried out with the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium. Cell division rates, photosynthetic efficiencies, pigm...
متن کاملGoing with the Flow: Detection of Drift in Response to Hypo-Saline Stress by the Estuarine Benthic Diatom Cylindrotheca closterium
Avoidance response is a well-known mechanism for escaping environmental stress. For organisms with reduced active movement, such as benthic microalgae, drifting could be a specifically selected mean of avoiding less favorable environments. To test this hypothesis, a system was developed to assess if hypo-saline stress triggers drift in the estuarine benthic diatom Cylindrotheca closterium. Conc...
متن کاملMitosis in the pennate diatom Surirella ovalis
Mitosis in Surirella is described; this organism displays a number of unusual features including an unorthodox method of chromosome attachment to the spindle, and the differentiation of an extranuclear central spindle from a large spherical organelle named the microtubule center (MC). The MC, present during interphase, breaks down at late prophase as the central spindle is formed. Later, the sp...
متن کاملThe metabolism of organic acids by a marine pennate diatom.
Cocconeis diminuta, a marine benthic diatom, metabolizes acetate and lactate-(14)C. In the light, the major product was lipid, whereas in the dark, CO(2) was the major product. Analysis of proteins synthesized in the presence of acetate or lactate showed that radioactivity was incorporated predominantly into the glutamate family of amino acids and those amino acids related directly to the subst...
